From June 1 through 3, the Nuclear Security Science and Policy Institute (NSSPI) conducted a nuclear security curriculum review workshop with Amity University on the Amity campus in near New Delhi in India. Faculty from nine different Indian universities attended the workshop to increase their knowledge on nuclear security topics and share their lessons learned, best practices, and challenges in developing nuclear security curricula.
The subject matter experts for the workshop included both U.S. and Indian faculty: NSSPI Director Dr. Sunil Chirayath; NSSPI Deputy Director and Assistant Professor of nuclear engineering Dr. Craig Marianno; Dr. Sitakanta Mishra of Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University; and Dr. Reshmi Kazi of Jamia Milia Ismalia University. The U.S. Department of State’s Partnership for Nuclear Security sponsored the workshop and was represented by Mr. Philip K. Barone. CRDF Global provided the logistics support to Amity University.
The workshop provided an opportunity to develop a strong network among Indian academicians to share knowledge on nuclear security. Participants were able to increase their knowledge through presentations on topics like: the role of the human element in nuclear security; nuclear nonproliferation and nuclear material accountancy; nuclear fuel cycle and nuclear materials; nuclear material detection techniques for nuclear security; nuclear security risk calculation codes; and the legal framework for nuclear security. The workshop also included a review of nuclear security lectures and curricula being developed and taught at the different Indian universities.
