The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) identified the ability to safeguard small modular reactors (SMRs) and Generation IV reactors as a critical capability in its Department of Safeguards Long-Term R&D Plan, released in 2013. Among these, pebble bed reactors and other reactors using TRISO fuel are considered promising technologies for near-term deployment. Recent milestones, such as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s approval of the construction permit for Kairos Power’s Hermes demonstration reactor in 2023, underscore the urgency of advancing safeguards approaches, tools, and techniques tailored to these reactor types.
This INMM workshop aims to foster discussion and research on safeguards and nonproliferation challenges related to pebble bed reactors. It will bring together researchers, practitioners, regulators, vendors, and students to address these topics. The Texas A&M University INMM Student Chapter seeks to showcase cutting-edge, safeguards-relevant research while facilitating key discussions that support global nonproliferation objectives.
The Texas A&M University INMM Chapter and the Center for Nuclear Security Science and Policy Initiatives invite you to join us for the Pebble Bed and TRISO Fueled Reactor Nonproliferation Workshop, taking place February 3–6, in College Station, Texas.
