
Short Bio:
MAN-SUNG YIM is the Director of Center for Nuclear Security Science and Policy Initiatives (NSSPI) and Professor in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at Texas A&M University. Formerly, he served on the Nuclear Engineering faculty at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), North Carolina State University (NCSU) and MIT. He was also a joint faculty between Oak Ridge National Lab (Global Nuclear Security Technology Division) and NCSU, a Sam Nunn International Security Fellow at Georgia Tech, a member of North Carolina Science Advisory Board on Air Toxics Emissions, and a member of Nuclear Nonproliferation External Steering Committee of Idaho National Laboratory. Dr. Yim’s work seeks to promote the safe and responsible use of nuclear technology with research activities covering nuclear nonproliferation/security, nuclear waste management, nuclear safety, and nuclear energy policy.
While working at KAIST, Prof. Yim served as Vice President of International Office and President of KAIST US Foundation. He also founded NEREC (Nuclear Nonproliferation Education and Research Center) and trained over 330 next generation leaders in nuclear nonproliferation and nuclear policy from ~60 countries over ten-year period. He is currently a Senior Member of the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Advisory Board on Nuclear and Radiation Studies, the Scientific Program Committee of Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), Council of Advisors on Nuclear Education, Science, Technology and Policy of OECD/NEA, and Korean National Academy of Engineering. He is Associate Editor (Asia) of Nuclear Technology for American Nuclear Society, a member of Editorial Advisory Board of Progress in Nuclear Energy and International Journal of Nuclear Security and an editor at the Journal for Peace and Nuclear Disarmament.
Prof. Yim has over 370 technical publications in refereed journals (over 90) and national/international conference proceedings (over 290). He is author of “Nuclear Waste Management: Science, Technology, and Policy” (textbook, Springer Nature), “Energy Behind: Power that moves the world” (MID Publisher, in Korean (co-author)), and “Ecological Risk” (Publishing House of the University of St. Petersburg, in Russian (co-author)).
Prof. Yim is a graduate of Seoul National University (Nuclear Engineering, BS/MS), University of Cincinnati (Nuclear Engineering, PhD), and Harvard University (Environmental Health Science, SM/ScD).
