International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano met with NSSPI Director Dr. William Charlton, NSSPI Deputy Director Dr. David Boyle, Nuclear Power Institute (NPI) Director Dr. Lee Peddicord, and Dr. Yassin Hassan, head of the department of nuclear engineering at Texas A&M University as part of his visit to the campus last week. He was briefed on the work of the institutes and the department and discussed opportunities for further collaboration in safeguards and security technologies with NSSPI leadership.
This was Ambassador Amano’s first visit to a public university in the US and his most extensive, due to Texas A&M’s wide range of programs directly related to the mission of the IAEA. During his visit, Ambassador Amano praised Texas A&M as “one of the best places in the world to train people.”
Both NSSPI and NPI have Observer Status with the IAEA and are actively engaged in providing training and educational support to the Agency. NSSPI has specifically developed safeguards educational training materials for the IAEA that are currently used to educate and train safeguards experts throughout the world. NSSPI has also developed materials for the IAEA’s International Nuclear Security Network (INSEN), and Dr. Charlton has been involved in the reviewing and editing of the IAEA technical publication Introduction to Nuclear Security. NSSPI also collaborates with the Agency in research and technology development.
