On March 3, Willem Janssens, Head of the Department of Nuclear Security and Safeguards at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission in Ispra, Italy, visited the TEES Nuclear Security Science and Policy Institute (NSSPI) to present a seminar on JRC activities and discuss collaborations between JRC and NSSPI.
The JRC boasts numerous global experts on nuclear material safeguards, non-destructive assay, containment and surveillance techniques, process monitoring, open source analysis, risk mitigation, nuclear forensics, and first response activities in radiological/nuclear events. Janssens and NSSPI staff members discussed potential collaborations between the two centers, including possible internships at JRC for NSSPI students and participation from NSSPI subject matter experts in joint nuclear security and safeguards training activities.
As part of his visit, Janssens gave a presentation on the nuclear safeguards, nonproliferation, and nuclear security activities of the JRC to NSSPI students. He also visited the Department of Nuclear Engineering’s nuclear security laboratory, the NSSPI nuclear forensics laboratory, the TEEX Disaster City facility, and the Nuclear Science Center’s TRIGA research reactor.
