From June 1-3, NSSPI Director Dr. Sunil Chirayath and NSSPI Deputy Director Dr. Craig Marianno helped to conduct a workshop on safeguards education at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The “Workshop on Strengthening UGM’s Nuclear Engineering Curriculum with Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Safeguards Education” was sponsored by the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration’s International Nuclear Safeguards Engagement Program and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). Workshop presenters included not only NSSPI faculty, but also scientists from PNNL and Los Alamos National Laboratory. Attendees included faculty from UGM’s nuclear engineering program as well as members of Indonesia’s Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN).
The workshop focused on demonstrating to UGM faculty the types of courses and research in nuclear safeguards that could be offered to students in their nuclear engineering program. The workshop was well received by all participants and also provided UGM faculty further insight on how to better prepare their students for careers in BAPETEN, the Indonesian national nuclear energy agency (BATAN), and the burgeoning Indonesian nuclear industry.
