Nuclear Security Science & Policy Institute (NSSPI) staff members, Dr. Sunil Chirayath and Claudio Gariazzo, along with nuclear engineering graduate student Royal Elmore, traveled to Vienna, Austria to participate in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) symposium on “International Safeguards: Linking Strategy, Implementation and People” held October 20-24. The symposium provided an opportunity for participants to learn about cutting-edge research projects, meet with fellow nuclear safeguards and security professionals and stakeholders to discuss current and future research challenges, and experience the rich culture of Vienna.
Chirayath and Elmore gave a joint presentation titled “Containment and Surveillance and Physical Protection Updates for Proliferation Resistance Analysis using PRAETOR” in the symposium session on “Promoting the Interface between Nuclear Safety, Security and Safeguards”. Gariazzo co-chaired the session on “Training and Education in Nuclear Non-proliferation and Safeguards” and also made a presentation titled “Nuclear Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Education at Texas A&M University” in this session.
A booth featuring safeguards education and research programs at the Texas A&M University Department of Nuclear Engineering and NSSPI was also exhibited, and the programs were presented directly to IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano and the Deputy Director General for Safeguards Tero Varjoranta.
