Mining of uranium ore is the first step in the fuel cycle. Uranium ore is commonly found in several ores including Uraninite, Pitchblende, and Davidite. It exists naturally on most continents and can be acquired through mining the Earth to extract the ore. Uranium mining is a general mining operation. It is similar to other mining operations and is often conducted via the common open pit mining (Figures 2 and 3) or shaft mining techniques (Figure 4).
