Combined Radiation Signatures

Gamma and neutron radiation signals can be used in combined signatures.  A ratio of the total gamma ray activity to total neutron activity is dependent on total burnup.  However, the dependence of both signatures on cooling time is cancelled by taking the ratio.  As a result the total gamma ray activity to total neutron activity ratio signature can be used to directly estimate the total burnup.  Comparison of fission product gamma ray activity ratios to the total neutron activity can also isolate burnup and be used to distinguish between mixed oxide (MOX) assemblies and traditional all uranium oxide (UOX) spent fuel assemblies.
