Signatures for Fissile Material Content Verification

Fissile material content verification is challenging due to the weak radiation signals from fissile material.  One option is to use verified values of burnup and initial enrichment to estimate spent fuel fissile material content with reactor physics code computational simulation.  However, use of an actual signature to measure fissile material content directly is preferred.

As discussed in the section on spent nuclear fuel safeguards, coincidence neutron activity can be used to quantify fissile material concentration in the fuel. Active interrogation with an external neutron source can enhance this signature.
