From March 18-20 NSSPI Director Dr. William Charlton
participated in the CTBTO Academic Forum in Vienna, Austria.
Focused on education related to the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty
(CTBT), the forum was organized by the Preparatory Commission for
the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) as
part of their Capacity Development Initiative and intended for
academics engaged and interested in CTBT education as well as

NSSPI student Alison Goodsell was awarded the Isotopes and
Radiation Session Award at the 2012 American Nuclear Society (ANS)
Student Conference, which was held April 12-15 in Las Vegas,
Nevada. Goodsell presented research on the use of a quartz-crystal
x-ray spectrometer to improve the detection of the Pu and U x-ray
peaks in spent fuel by reducing the Compton background. The
overall scope of the presentation was on the design process for the
quartz crystal and the customized tungsten collimator system.

From December 11-16, 2011, NSSPI staff and students presented
their work at the GLOBAL 2011 conference held at Makuhari Messe in
the Chiba province of Japan. The first day of the conference was
focused on the affects of the Fukushima-Daiichi accident on the
nuclear futures of nations such as France, Russia, the U.S.,
Kazakhstan, India, and, of course, Japan. The second day was
devoted to in-depth discussions on advances in technology related
to the back-end of the nuclear fuel cycle.

The 31st Annual Meeting of European Safeguards Research and
Development Association (ESARDA) took place from the 26th to the
28th of May, 2009 in Vilnius, Lithuania. NSSPI was represented by
Dr. William Charlton, Adrienne LaFleur, Dr. Paul Nelson, and Daniel
Strohmeyer. According to Adrienne Lafleur, the international
community expressed great interest in the research NSSPI presented
at the meeting, and it was a "very interesting and a great
