NSSPI to Co-Sponsor Dr. Siegfried Hecker in Invited Speaker Series.
Former Los Alamos Director and current Co-Director of the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University, Dr. Siegfried Hecker will be speaking as part of the Nuclear Technology and Society Invited Speaker Series, co-sponsored by the Nuclear Engineering Department and NSSPI. Dr. Siegfried S. Hecker will discuss how North Korea proclaimed itself a world nuclear power on Oct. 9, 2006, with its nuclear weapon test. Although the technical success of the test is highly questionable, it changed the political dynamics on the Korean Peninsula in the North's favor. He will describe how North Korea got the bomb and the prospects of giving it up based on his six visits to North Korea in the past five years. Dr. Hecker will draw lessons from the North Korean experience for the broader global nuclear proliferation challenges we face today. The lecture will take place on April 16th at 5:30 pm in 102 Jack E. Brown Chemical Engineering Building. A reception will be held at 5:00 pm.
